Rules, Roles and Routing in Workflow

Workflow technology plays an important role in automating services across industries. In PeopleSoft the three Rs of Workflow are Rules, Roles and Routing. Can you please explain what each of these signifies?

    Rules [PS_APPR_RULE_HDR]
    consists of things called step for eg
    step 0 will be the initializor
    step 1 RM approver
    step 2 Dept Head

    Roles [PS_APPR_RULE_DETL]
    are specified in Rules
    RM approver is rulename, it will have a field for rolename,
    in this case, consider RM has a customized RM_APPROVER role associated with him so on step 1 approval will go to users having this role
    similarly, Dept Head has a DH_APPROVER role
